And we’re just getting warmed up.

what is this?

I might have to get in on this. The boys are using their computers for homework and games, but oldest son has a PC that pretty much sits there unused. He’s on his Chromebook most of the time.

Warmed up is an accurate way to describe this:
Though I’m currently stuck with no GPU work units, so warming is much more limited than it could be otherwise.

I will get in on it tomorrow. My I7 7700 and 1070 are not doing anything during the day anyways

Fun fact: if you use your computer to fold proteins, you can’t use it to use slurs in video games

You wanna get on it, throw those two new gaming rigs at it. You’ll be a contender.

That will be later this week, after the video cards arrive. They should be here on Wednesday.

I’ve thought about joining in. If I can figure out how to get the a/c to compensate for all the heat being generated in my office already (one server, two laptops, three monitors, plus lighting), I might hop on board the train. Right now it’s nearly 80°F in here.

I’d really like to see us in the top 1000.

I tried using folding at home but it had no tasks for my GPU, an RTX 2080.
It did have stuff for my CPU, a Ryzen 7 2700x. what is the team ID for oppo? I’ll join in on the fun!

I bough t a couple of cards that turned out to be too big for the box, so I reo rdered and got these instead.

I decided to put my old 2010 MacBook Pro to work. Sadly, GPU folding is not supported on Macs. :( Oh, well. I’ll let the old i7 put in some work.

Let me know when you’re ready to send me that other one. I’ll email you a label. You can pick up the flat rate medium box at the PO.

I’m lucky if my GPUs are working a third of the time. F@H is gotten better over the last few weeks but definitely still has less work to give than people willing to do it.

I can only imagine I’m halfway up the list because I joined early and I’m running two computers .
My work laptop (Precision)
has an i7-8850H CUP and a GP107GLM (Quadro P2000 Mobile) GPU
.
My home laptop (Vaio)
has an i7-3612QM CPU and a GK107 (GeForce GT 640M) GPU.
I have no idea how those rank but I know my Vaio was the shit when I got it, like, 7 years ago, and my Precision is no slouch now.

I might give that a shot. I have to avoid burning the house down. I just realized there isn’t a smoke detector in here!

Waiting for work units for GPUs is what kills my productivity. Woke up this morning and it had been trying all night after finishing one worth 130k points. Same with my son’s computer.

If it’s set to idle, does it run when the computer is in sleep mode ?

I have an i5 Xeon with 6 cores and 12 threads and a Quadro 2000 GPU and I got promptly shoved down the ranking. Jminer is his own team with a cryptomining server farm in his basement and NKato has GPU envy. So we’re killing it.

Smoke detectors are around $10 at Home Despot. Personally, I think they are a good idea.

T he house was pre-wired with smoke detectors and those are all connected to the house alarm system. We have them in all of the bedrooms, the living room, the kitchen and the dining room. That’s why I was surprised to discover there isn’t one in the office!

Yeah. I’d just install a battery-operated one for simplicity’s sake.
A thing happened a few weeks back and I thought of you. You and I had a dialogue about lane splitting some time ago. Though I’d have characterized the discussion as perhaps mildly contentious, still, it stayed with me and I am trying to be more aware of lane splitters, even though, well, I hate having that going on. Though now that I’m on the lookout for it, it doesn’t bother me as much. Anyhow, one beautiful Sunday afternoon as Missus and I drove home from church, I began losing traction and quickly realized that this was due to raw diesel fuel on the street surface and soon afterward, I realized that a Volvo half a block ahead was literally pouring diesel fuel out from its engine compartment. Mind you, this is a hilly, residential Bay Area neighborhood street. So we flashed and gesticulated and the driver stopped and we pulled up alongside and informed him that his car was pump ing out diesel fuel onto the road and as we did so, a woman on a motor cycle drove right between us , then stopped half a block ahead and turned and star ed at us as if to dare us to say anything to her. Anybody with any situational awareness _at all_ would have realized what was going on and I thought, Wow, what a bad name this woman gives to motorcyclists. I didn’t think of you because I wanted to debate the merits of lane splitting, but rather, to wonder aloud why we can’t all of us on the road work on being more excellent toward each other. And to let you know that the conversation had had some lasting impact with me. But this woman was a moron. And we’re not talking about some sassy twenty-something youngster , we’re talking someone in their 40s, dressed in clothing not appropriate for riding — if not getting a rash is part of the plan — and, well, let’s just say that the mount was narrower than she was. And she’d have been riding through the same fuel spill we were driving through for the past half a mile...

That was some time ago! I’m glad that we can have a somewhat contentious discourse, yet find common ground where we can be friendly. It’s unfortunate when friends clash over something and never speak again. I’m honored that I gave you something to consider and you really did consider it, whether it changed your mind or not.
This woman probably knew what was going on and decided to be obnoxious and assert her rights. It’s the same kind of mentality that leads people to openly carry a firearm into places where they really shouldn’t. Never mind that it scares people. Forget that going armed into a place of business makes everyone wonder about your motives. Just do what you please, then be “ shocked” when bad things start to happen.
I think some people forget that there may be more important things happening that really do warrant their attention. Instead, they take a me-first attitude and nearly get themselves killed.
I’ve been guilty of that and very nearly got myself killed , but I try to remember that lesson and pay closer attention. You never know, t here might be diesel on the road.

Friends can disagree. And I wouldn’t say it didn’t change my mind. And because that lady was a moron doesn’t mean all bikers are morons, and heaven knows there are plenty of morons operating four-wheeled vehicles.
Anyhow, the bottom line for me is that I take my Oppo seriously and every sentence I type is an exercise in improving my writing craft. Good folks here.
Did I ask, do you have cloth masks? I am making some, not cheesy speed jobs, but with serious effort. Can I mail you some for you and yours?

I converse with people on Oppo more than I do with “friends” on Facebook. I’m glad to have you among my Oppo friends. You help make this a better place.
Thanks for the offer of the masks . We have four N-95 masks for emergency use and the stuff to make our own. My wife found a pattern that includes a pocket for inserting more serious filter materials. It’s been my experience that air will take the path of least resistance, so I’m not convinced that the pocket will work. However, I will reserve judgement until she gets some made and we can test them out.
In the meantime, enjoy this photo my cousin posted of himself. In his words, “I got this.”
